MADISON, Wis–Democrats in Wisconsin announce plans to put a referendum on abortion on the April ballot. Governor Tony Evers says the non-binding measure would ask voters if they support overturning the state’s 1849 law banning all abortions and restoring the protections provided by the Roe v Wade decision.
Wisconsin law does not allow for direct legislation through referendum. During the last campaign, several high-profile Republicans–like Senator Ron Johnson–called for a referendum on abortion in Wisconsin. The measure heads to the state Senate for consideration.
