One of the hot button issues in the race for Neenah School Board this spring is the fate of the Shattuck Middle School property. The district has reached an agreement to sell the site along Elm Street to Northpointe Development for construction of apartments and townhomes, if Northpointe can get the city to rezone the property for high-density residential use.
That has led to opposition from those living in the neighborhood. Former Board President Michelle Swardenski says the current board should have been more open with neighbors about the scope of the project……………
Incumbent Tom Hanby admits the process was not great–but the district is now bound by its offer agreement……………
Incumbent Deborah Watry says she would be okay with selling to someone other than Northpointe–but she believes redevelopment should still involve high-density housing……………
The candidates all took part in a recent forum hosted by the League of Women voters.
