FOND DU LAC, WI — An investigation is underway into an officer involved shooting Saturday morning that left a man and a Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s K9 injured.
Fond du Lac Police and Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a disturbance involving weapons at 5:55 A.M. in the 500-block of Drury Place in Fond du Lac. That’s where responding officers encountered a man in vehicle. A short time later, gunfire was exchanged between the man in the vehicle and a sheriff’s deputy. The man was injured in the exchange and officers began life-saving procedures, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other residents or officers were injured in the shoot-out, though a sheriff’s department K9 was shot and seriously wounded and taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office says the K9 is in stable condition.
The sheriff’s deputy, who is not being identified, is now on administrative leave, which is standard department policy.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is now investigating the case along with the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Wisconsin State Crime Lab and a DCI crime specialist.
The sheriff’s deputy was wearing a body camera during the incident.
DCI will review all evidence and facts of the case and submit its findings to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney.
The name of the shooting victim has not been released.
