Dave Edwards and It’s Just my take, 3-22-24
Well, here we go…March Madness has begun! O.K…then why am I not as excited as usual?
The NCAA tournament is normally a “must see” around my house. Heck, my wife AND my daughter are both taking time off to watch the tournament!
Millions of us drop everything about 11am on the first two days of the tourney to take in game after game, gorging on nachos, taco dip, sliders, wings or a combination of all of the above! No wonder we feel like walking glue by Saturday morning.
My…disinterest tends to exist on a few levels. I am getting older and my fandom has slipped a bit through the years. The constant shifting of players through the transfer portal is dizzying. I saw one roster this year have just 4 players back from last year, and the other 11 were transfers. Wuh??
Add to that the NIL deals that turn college coaches into Bob Barker, trying to make the best deal to woo that post player that can shoot the 3.
Through it all, I feel that the drive for the almighty dollar has tainted this event and so many others in such a way that we won’t ever view this as an amateur sport again. Lines are inexorably blurred, direction from the NCAA is utterly invisible.
We’ll just ask for forgiveness at a later date.
