STURGEON BAY, Wis. — A former Door County man convicted in the cold case murder of his wife has died in prison.
Richard Pierce was convicted in 2022 — 47 years after the disappearance of his wife, Carol Jean.
Pierce moved to Michigan with another woman around the time his wife disappeared in 1975. She was not reported missing for three months.
Carol Jean’s body was never found, which prevented prosecutors from filing charges against her husband.
Pierce was appealing his conviction, and his next hearing was scheduled for Jan. 3. He was 88 years old.
