During our monthly “Focus on Health” segment with ThedaCare we spoke with Dr. Amanda Kossak, a Family Medicine Physician with ThedaCare Physicians-Appleton North.
May is Women’s Health Month so we’re spotlighting two health issues specific to women – perimenopause and menopause. Dr. Kossak explains what perimenopause and menopause are and how they differ from one
another.
Here are some of the questions we went through with Dr. Kossak,
- At what age do women typically experience perimenopause or menopause?
- What are some common physical and emotional symptoms women might experience during perimenopause and menopause?
- Are there any lifestyle changes or habits that can help manage symptoms during the transition from perimenopause to menopause?
- What role does diet and exercise play in easing the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause?
- What misconceptions or myths about menopause would you like to dispel?
If you feel like you need additional care, Dr. Kossak advises that you have a conversation with the health care provider you feel most comfortable with. That may include a nurse practitioner, primary care provider or your OB-GYN. The big key is to start a conversation with a medical professional.
