APPLETON, Wis. — It’s now up to the Appleton Common Council to decide whether to reinstate a truancy ordinance in the Appleton Area School District.
The Appleton Safety and Licensing Committee votes Wednesday to approve the ordinance proposal.
It targets students between 14 and 17 years old who have five or more unexcused absences and could result in the issuance of a citation to students and their families. The citation would set procedures to reinstate the student.
Alder Denise Fenton is not convinced that the ordinance will be effective based on other school districts’ experiences………
English teacher Corey Otis believes it would give violators something to ponder……..
If approved by the common council, the ordinance would be reviewed after four semesters to determine its effectiveness.
