KAUKAUNA, Wis. — The Kaukauna Police Department responds to an incident in which one of its officers dropped a found cat in a field rather than to an animal shelter as required.
In a written statement, the department apologized to the owners of the cat and the community for the way the matter was handled. The statement says, “Moving forward, all domesticated animals that the Kaukauna Police Department takes custody of will be transported to the Fox Valley Humane Society.”
The statement goes on to say that an internal investigation has been completed and the officer has received corrective action.
The cat named “Walter” was found by a homeowner who notified police to pick up the animal and was assured by the officer the cat would go to a shelter. Kaukauna police were made aware of the incident after Walter’s owner came to the shelter, only to be told the cat wasn’t there.
