APPLETON, Wis–The president of the Friends of the Hearthstone group fires back at accusations of mismanagement of the facility. Antoinette Powell issues a written statement claiming a group that made public claims of failing to prevent alleged embezzlement from the museum misappropriated the name of their organization.
Powell adds that former Treasurer Steven Jahnke insisted that he be the only person authorized to make deposits and withdrawals and file tax forms. Jahnke is accused of using more than $70,000 in museum funds for personal expenses.
Powell also claims that Jahnke used health issues as an excuse for failing to turn over financial records upon request, leading the Board of Directors to request a police investigation last year. The statement adds that the Hearthstone remains on solid financial footing, despite the alleged embezzlement.
Powell does not address the complaints from the other “Friends” group about a refusal to take on new directors, failing to meet as scheduled, and not releasing annual reports.
