In our March Focus on Health we welcomed Dr. Joseph Bovi, Radiation Oncologist and Physician Chief of ThedaCare Cancer Care. Dr. Bovi helped us highlight Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the importance of early detection when it comes to effectively treating the disease.
Colorectal cancer is a disease that starts in the colon or the rectum. These cancers are referred to as colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending on where they start. Most colorectal cancers start as a growth on the inner lining of the colon or rectum called polyps.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.
Early detection of colorectal cancer is vital because it allows for the removal of precancerous polyps before they become malignant, prevents cancer development and significantly improves survival rates. When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable, often requiring less invasive procedures with better outcomes and avoids advanced-stage, more aggressive and often fatal disease progression.
We also talked through common risk factors for colorectal cancer, the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer and how people can help prevent colon cancer.
