Appleton man charged in April fatal crash

APPLETON, Wis. — Appleton police make an arrest in connection with an April 9 fatal crash.

Eighteen-year old Giovanni Cadavid of Appleton was taken into custody early Thursday in connection with a crash at Wisconsin Avenue and Meade Street that resulted in the deaths of Margaret and Alan Hopfensperger. Cadavid, who was 17 when the crash occurred, was also being treated for serious injuries.

Police say Cadavid’s vehicle failed to stop at a red traffic signal, colliding with the Hopfensperger vehicle. An investigation determined Cadavid was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

He’s facing two counts of homicide by use of a vehicle, two counts of homicide by use of a vehicle with prohibited alcohol content, injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle – great bodily harm and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle with prohibited alcohol concentration – great bodily harm.

An initial appearance is scheduled for June 16 in Outagamie County Court.
