Winnebago County property taxpayers may get a break on sending in their final two installments of the year.
The County Board will do away with the one-percent interest that’s charged on late payments until October 1st, because of the economic impact of COVID-19.
County Executive Mark Harris fears that could put the county in a precarious financial position. He says they have to send other local governments and school districts their share of that money this summer.
To stop the county’s finances from potentially being impacted, each community in Winnebago County could take up their own proposals to let property owners miss the deadlines for the last two installments.
Harris is also concerned some will take advantage of the new October 1st deadline, and hold off on their payments, even if they have the money. He believes businesses might delay, to make their more recent quarterly earnings reports look better.
