A retired Army military colonel doesn’t think President Trump should activate the U.S. military to deal with protests around the country.
Col. Jeff McCausland is a CBS News military consultant, and he says the Insurrection Act has only been used about 20 times in the country’s history, typically when federal laws are being overtly flaunted by local governments.
He says it was authorized by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1957 to enforce desegregation, and by President Lyndon Johnson in 1960, to make sure the Civil Rights Acts was properly executed.
McCausland believes military leaders should directly tell the president about their constitutional responsibilities, instead of their responsibility to him as commander in chief.
President Trump is considering using military troops, because of the protests after the death of George Floyd.
