Young adults are a big reason behind a jump in COVID-19 cases in Winnebago County.
Since Memorial Day, the county has the most new confirmed cases in northeast Wisconsin.
Health Officer Doug Gieryn says going back 2-1/2 weeks, over 44 percent of them are in the 20-29 age group. He says they’re concerned with the current trend, that the age demographic “might start driving this outbreak within this community.”
Gieryn believes it’s reasonable that the end of the “safer at home” order, and the reopening of bars, restaurants, and businesses are factors. He says Memorial Day weekend likely is too.
The state reports Winnebago County has had 309 confirmed cases throughout the pandemic. About one-third of them, or 105, were reported over just the past seven days.
