Police officers in Appleton have been busier over the past two months.
Chief Todd Thomas says crime is up, in part because more people are out-and-about. He says the number of calls and cases are back to where the department would normally be for this time of year, if not a little higher.
Thomas reports they’re seeing more fights, crashes, and drunk drivers. There are other more common problems, like drugs and mental health crisis calls.
Thomas says the city’s violent crime rate has been steady for several years, and that trend has continued in 2020. Aggravated assault is the most common, making up 60 percent of all violent crimes.
