A new study estimates Mercury Marine is worth more than five billion dollars to Fond du Lac. The economic impact report was compiled by Envision Fond du Lac and takes into account salaries paid to employees–how that money is spent in the community–and taxes paid by the company. Merc Marine employs four-thousand people in Fond du Lac–with another seven-thousand working for companies in their supply chain. In 2009, Fond du Lac County adopted a half-percent sales tax to provide a 50-million dollar low-interest loan to Merc–as the company was considering moving its production work to Oklahoma. Since then, the company has invested more than one-point-five billion dollars into its facility.
