The state Department of Health Services recommends pregnant women in six counties be tested for syphilis. The D-H-S reports a spike in syphilis cases since the start of the pandemic–and an increase in congenital cases–where pregnant women pass on the bacteria to their unborn child. Repeat third trimester testing is recommended for pregnant women in Brown, Winnebago, Dane, Milwaukee, Racine, and Waukesha counties.
