Appleton Schools will go to optional masking in January 2022
The rapid spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19 is raising the effectiveness of masking. That question was raised as the Appleton Area School District Board of Education debated a plan Monday evening to extend mandatory masking through February 17. Board Member Deb Truyman raised parental concerns about the emotional impact of mandatory masking on youngsters.
Board member Jim Bowman says while mandatory masking is not a perfect solution, optional masking remains too risky.
In the end, the Appleton Board of Education vote 6-1 in favor of extending the masking mandate.
