OSHKOSH, WI — Winnebago County is moving ahead with the development of a residential facility for released violent sexual offenders.
The county board of supervisors approved a capital project plan that would raise one-million-68-thousand-427 dollars for the facility. The housing unit for 980 Violent Sexual Offenders would be built near the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office headquarters.
County Corporation Counsel Mary Anne Mueller says the facility will save money in the long run.
But Supervisor Steven Binder believes the county should first make sure the plan passes muster with the state.
The state requires all counties to find housing for offenders after they’ve been released from prison. County Executive Jon Doemel says locating the facility near the sheriff’s office will allow for better monitoring of residents.
