We have been talking all week about the increase in the price of eggs. Quite a few people say they have seen the prices more than double over the course of the last 12 months. Most main stream media pundits are quick to point out the avian flu has greatly reduced the number of egg bearing fowl across the country, but some groups are beginning to call for the FTC to crack down on some of the major egg producers in the country, with claims that some may be engaging in price gouging.
The biggest producer is Cal-Maine, and their records show a 5 fold increase in profits over the course of the same 12 month period. If the avian flu were the only factor to consider, it would make sense to see an increase in revenue, but not profit.
I sat down for a chat with Dee Laninga with Farm Action to break down what the organization wants the FTC to do to prevent these practices, what the Farm Bill is, and what can be done to get money back into the pockets of consumers.
