APPLETON, Wis–Officers with the Appleton Police Department report a nearly 20% increase in the use of force last year. An annual report from the department shows 87-instances of officers using force in the apprehension of suspects in 2023, with one of those incidents meeting the definition of “deadly force”.

The report blames the increase on more suspects actively resisting arrest. There were 17-incidents of a suspect committing assault or battery on an officer.
