APPLETON, WI — The Monarch Butterfly would join the list of official Wisconsin State Symbols to raise public awareness of the insect’s plight.
Legislation is introduced in both the state assembly and state senate to make the Monarch Wisconsin’s state butterfly. The bills were announced at Butterfly Gardens in Appleton, which was founded as a preserve to boost the Monarch population.

Representative Paul Tittl, (R) Manitowoc, a co-sponsor of the legislation, calls the proposed designation an important step.
Wisconsin has historically been a summer destination for Monarch butterfly colonies.
