So, how are your trees doing?
I’ll admit it unabashedly—I love trees. Well, most trees. I’m not always in love with the tree my golf ball rolls behind at Fox Valley Golf Club…but, most trees.
The reason I mention this is because my wife and I have been passively looking to add one more tree to an already busy landscape at our home. We have room for one more evergreen in the midst of some plants we’re willing to move out. Now comes the tough part…which tree do we select?
This time of year, most nurseries or garden centers are pretty well picked over. Sure–there are some scattered evergreens, in various shapes and sizes. But one must remember—it’s not what it looks like now…it’s what it will look like in years! Our preference is not to land a tree that will get massive in size and width—something more like an eventual 12 to 15 footer with a 4-6 foot width. We’ll plant it now and watch it grow slowly over the years.
I write this with a bit of a hidden agenda. I have witnessed, even among my neighbors, a neglect that sets in after planting. Poor watering, no upkeep, damage from riding mowers, weeds, etc. If you are going to pop for the trees, then take care of them! They love TLC, fertilizer, and mulch, baby!
Update: my wife scored a new tree yesterday. Guess what I get to do later this week? It’s O.K.…..I love it.
