KAUKAUNA, Wis. — The Kaukauna Fire Department may try a new strategy for hiring.
The department currently hires certified firefighters and trains them to serve as paramedics as well. But as competition for firefighters increases, the department is looking at hiring paramedics and training them to be firefighters.
The majority of calls to Kaukauna fire are for paramedic services each year.
The number of candidates qualified in both fields has been dwindling for nearly a decade.
