APPLETON, Wis. — A newer community effort is helping Appleton’s chronically homeless residents with safe, warm places to stay during the coldest months.
BSC Companies, Inc., a nonprofit ministry of St. Joseph Catholic Parish, has been expanding its services to meet the needs of those who often fall through the cracks.
Last year, the group opened the basement of St. Joseph’s as a temporary shelter. The idea was rooted by Br. Ray Stadmeyer, who joined the parish in 2022.
During Focus Fox Valley, Hayley Tenpas spoke with volunteers Andrea Bartel-Riffle, Steve Wuerger and Br. Ray.
The trio shared that this year, they are renting motel rooms to provide private, safe spaces, with plans to eventually open a dedicated downtown shelter.
Unlike organizations focused on preventing homelessness or helping people transition to permanent housing, BSC Companies focuses on individuals who remain chronically homeless, providing them with immediate safety, conversation and dignity. The organization closely partners with Pillars as an overflow option during extreme weather, ensuring no one is left out in the cold.
The effort is entirely volunteer-driven, with community members from multiple faith groups coming together to ensure the program runs smoothly.
With plans to expand, BSC Companies is becoming an important part of Appleton’s safety net for its most vulnerable residents.
