OSHKOSH, Wis. — Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz defends his department’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Several people asked the county to end its participation in what is known as the 287(g) program, which sees the department notify ICE when a non-resident in the country illegally is arrested for a criminal offense.

Last year, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office notified ICE of 164 potential illegal immigrants who were taken into custody. Only 10 were turned over to federal officials.
