SHAWANO CO. Wis. — Officials have identified the man shot and killed by a Shawano County deputy on March 10th as 38-year-old Jonathan Lupe.
Deputies responded to a disturbance in the Town of Green Valley on State Highway 22 the morning of March 10th.
Lupe was found locked in a bathroom and refused to come out, claiming he had a gun.
After less-lethal attempts failed, Lupe reportedly advanced on officers with what they believed was a firearm.
Deputy Cole Vande Hei, with four and a half years of service, fired his weapon, striking Lupe.
Lupe was taken to a local hospital where he later died. During the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal investigation scene examination afterward, the item was collected and determined to be a black/brown 177 caliber Crosman Pellet Gun, model 357.
DCI is leading the investigation. Per agency policy, Vande Hei has been placed on administrative leave.
