(OSHKOSH, WI) — The Oshkosh Common Council approves an offer to purchase the former City Center Mall property.
The city will propose $12.5-million for the 17-acre site along the north shore of the Fox River. The existing building will be demolished–with a new city hall and other developments going up on the site.
While some business owners have expressed concerns about the plans, Council member Joe Stephenson says they would enhance the property.
Mayor Matt Mugerauer opposes the purchase, saying this is not the right time to spend that much money.
Ken Osmond–who owns a coffee shop in the building–says the plans would put existing businesses in jeopardy.
Council member Brad Spanbauer hopes there will be space for those businesses in the future of the site.
The Oshkosh Plan Commission will make a formal bid for the City Center site. If approved, the full Common Council will vote on it later this month.
