A group hopes to improve air quality around schools in Oshkosh by having parents shut off their engines when picking up their children.
The city’s Sustainability Advisory Board sent a letter to families in the district about what vehicle idling can do to the environment and their kids.
Board member Vic Oliver says research shows idling vehicles can irritate asthma symptoms in seven to eight percent of the population.
Oliver says it’s not a rule that can be enforced, but they people consider it. She says they also want people to use common sense when it’s hot or cold outside.
Oliver says they hope to expand the program in the future to other vehicles, like buses.
