A government watchdog is weighing in on the proposal from Majority Republicans to move the 2020 presidential primary from April to March.
Jay Heck of Common Cause says it’s a partisan ploy to benefit conservative state Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly. Heck is dismissing GOP arguments that there shouldn’t be partisan and non-partisan races on the same ballot. He says this would be the first time there was a move to change the supreme court election purely for partisan reasons.
Heck says holding a special election would be “shockingly costly” with estimates ranging from seven to $10 million. He says that’s after Republicans tried to block two special elections for Senate and Assembly seats over the summer because of cost concerns. He says their inconsistency is “laughable.”
