Sewer officials in the City of Chilton say flushable wipes are costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a year.
Tim Keuler is the lead operator of the Chilton wastewater treatment plant. He says it’s been a big problem for the last three years. He says pipe replacements and repairs have cost taxpayers over $68,000 over the past three years.
Keuler says the wipes don’t break down like regular toilet paper does. He says they’re not telling people not to use them. He says they just want people to throw the wipes away instead of flushing them.
Keuler says other nearby communities are having the same problem. He says they’ve reached out to area nursing homes and hospitals to educate them about the issue.
