A dog rescued from a home during an animal neglect investigation in Manitowoc is getting better.
The pit bull mix is with the Lakeshore Humane Society.
Tina Nichols says they’re already noticing a change in the dog they named Helena.
She says it’s hard to imagine the life Helena had been living just a week ago.
A police report shows Helena was living in the basement of a home surrounded by feces without food and water.
Another dog was found dead.
Nichols says every bone on Helena’s body was showing and you could tell she was desperate for food.
Nichols is reaching out to the Humane Society of the United States to make sure the couple who owned the dogs are charged with something more than a misdemeanor.
James and Jennifer Nettles will be in court on Monday.
Nichols says Helena will be ready for adoption once she is a little healthier.
