Eight people escaped from a duplex fire in Oshkosh early this morning.
Fire department spokesman John Holland says there weren’t any working smoke detectors in the house. He says one in the basement was only chirping, because the battery was low.
Holland says it was surprising that they all make it out safety. He says it’s very, very unusual for someone to smell the smoke.
He says three adults and five children were living in the one half of the side-by-side duplex in the 200 block of High Avenue. He says it was a cooking fire.
He says there were flames on the outside of the duplex when firefighters got there around 2:45 a.m. The fire caused extensive damage to that half of the duplex. Holland says there was little damage to the other side.
