The Town of Clayton is getting its first police officer.
Administrator Richard Johnston says they hired an officer, and she’ll be on the roads once she goes through the required training.
He says the town board heard from the community about the need to enforce the town’s laws. The Winnebago County Sheriff’s department has covered Clayton, and Johnston says deputies might not be as familiar with every community’s local rules.
Johnston says she’ll work Monday through Friday. Initially, he says she’ll be on the day shift, but she might rotate in the future.
The town made the hire while officials are exploring whether to incorporate into a village. The board also created a Combined Protective Services Department for the fire department, first responders, and the police officer.
