A retired state lawmaker from the Fox Cities passed away in July.
The death of former Republican Sen. Mike Ellis of Neenah was one of the top local stories in 2018. Ellis was 77.
He spent 44 years in the Legislature, including 32 in the Senate.
Former Republican Sen. Alan Lasee of Rockland served with Ellis for about 30 years. He says Ellis left a big imprint on the state. He says no one in the Legislature knew and understood state budgeting like him. He says Ellis was also very candid and told people where he stood.
Republican Sen. Rob Cowles of Allouez was a longtime colleague and friend. He says Ellis was an incredible public servant with intelligence, wit, and great humor. He called Ellis and former Governor Tommy Thompson the best leaders he’s seen in state government.
Ellis spent several years in top positions, as the Senate Majority Leader and Senate President. He was also on Neenah’s city council from 1969 to 1975.
