The state has a new attorney general.
Democrat Josh Kaul took the oath of office this afternoon.
Kaul says school safety will be one of his priorities. He called for universal background checks, more mental health funding for schools, and a red flag law to temporarily disarm people, if family or friends have concerns.
Kaul says he’ll also focus on opioid abuse and the growing meth problem. He says he wants to create a law to ensure the state never has a backlog of sexual assault kits that haven’t been tested.
Kaul defeated incumbent Republican Attorney General Brad Schimel in November.
