The federal government shutdown could be keeping train whistles blowing across Appleton.
The city is waiting to hear from the Federal Railroad Administration on its application for a quiet zone along a rail line that cuts through the city.
Paula Vandehey is the public works director. She says they submitted all the paperwork about 120 days ago. She says people came out to check the work, and they haven’t heard back since then.
Now, Vandehey says the federal workers that handle the applications are off. She says once they get the OK from the agency the whistle ban would take effect after city workers put up signs on both sides of each crossing. She says the posts are already in and the signs are ready to go.
