A bridge project on Oneida Street on the south end of downtown Appleton could cost about $850,000 more than expected.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says some of the soil has high lead levels so it needs to go to a landfill.
Alderman Ed Baranowski says the city should consider delaying other projects to make up for that. He says to add almost one million dollars onto the debt obligation is something he can’t approve. He says they should be looking at re-prioritization of projects as it relates to the debt.
By building a new, small bridge, the city can turn Appleton Street into a two-way street. The city council is expected to consider the additional borrowing on Wednesday. Members could also vote on a nearly $5.6 million contract for the overall project.
