An advocacy group says the release of a list of 47 priests with substantiated accusations of sexual abuse could be a triggering event for some survivors.
Helen Kobussen is the prevention director for the Sexual Assault Crisis Center of the Fox Cities. She says at the same time it could help others heal. She says it shows the church is acknowledging what happened and taking steps toward helping the victims.
Kobussen says the key to preventing abuse is teaching adults. She says leaders at Catholic schools and the church are working to help adults recognize warning signs in children so they can intervene.
15 of the priests on the list are still alive and they’re not involved in active ministry. An investigative firm found there were 98 substantiated victims.
