A lawmaker from Howard wants to help more people clear minor crimes from their record so it doesn’t hurt their chances of getting a job.
Republican Rep. David Steffen says it would have to be a non-violent low-level offense. He says there are thousands of people in the state with a single mark on their record that puts them in a situation where they’re under or unemployed.
Right now only people under 25 can have their record expunged. A judge also has to decide at sentencing whether a person could be eligible. Steffen wants to eliminate the age limit and help streamline the process.
