It looks like there’s going to be a battle between Governor Evers and Majority Republicans in the Legislature over income tax cuts for the middle class.
Evers laid out his proposal today, while GOP lawmakers are holding hearings on their plan.
Republicans want to use a budget surplus to pay for the cuts.
Evers is looking to scale back a manufacturing tax credit to offset part of the lost revenue. He doesn’t have a funding source for about $370 million that would still be needed, over two years.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says raising other taxes to pay for tax cuts is a “non-starter.” Evers says he can’t support using surplus money for a long-term tax cut.
