UW System regents are raising tuition at several schools.
Out-of-state undergraduate students will pay between one and three percent more at UW-Green Bay, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Parkside, Stevens Point, and Whitewater.
In-state students pursuing a graduate degree will see their tuition increase at nine schools, including Oshkosh and Green Bay. Tuition is also rising for out-of-state graduate students at every school, except La Crosse.
Republican Rep. Dave Murphy of Greenville understands they need to make changes to keep up with the market, but he’s concerned about one area. He says the cost for some physical therapy programs went up, and that could lead to an increase in health care costs because a degree will be more expensive to earn.
Murphy believes the regents also have to be careful about raising out-of-state tuition too much. He says they want to attract young talent to the state, and hopefully encourage more of them to stay in Wisconsin after they graduate.
The state has frozen tuition for in-state undergrads since 2013.
