Governor Evers is putting together his proposed budget, and it won’t include money to build a new prison in Green Bay.
The Democrat says the project is “still something we have to weigh.”
The current facility is more than 100 years old. Some local leaders hope to redevelop the current site along Highway 172, if a new prison opens.
There’s also an overcrowding issue in the overall prison system. The current population of almost 24,000 is 32 percent over capacity.
