Governor Evers is putting the finishing touches on his proposed budget, before he releases it tonight.
He’s already teased some ideas, leading up to tonight’s speech at the Capitol.
UW-Oshkosh political science professor Jim Simmons says Majority Republicans in the Legislature oppose many of the things Evers already released. He says GOP lawmakers could rewrite most of the budget, but Evers has one of the strongest veto pens of any governor in the country. He believes Evers will be able to put a lot of things back into the budget, using his line-item power.
Simmons doesn’t expect much compromise between Evers and Republicans. He thinks they agree on things like a middle class tax cut and road projects, but not on how to pay for them.
