The Green Bay Catholic Diocese is removing the name of a former bishop from the cathedral center at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in downtown Green Bay.
The newspaper for the diocese, The Compass, reports Bishop David Ricken explained the decision in a letter to parishioners. He says Bishop Aloysius Wycislo didn’t adequately deal with claims of clergy abuse, while he was bishop from 1968 to 1983.
Ricken wrote that with the recent release of names of priests and other clergy members, it’s clear that the majority of the problems happened in the 1960s and 1970s.
The space will now be known as the Cathedral Center.
