Appleton taxpayers are on the hook for some of the furnishings and equipment at the Fox Cities Exhibition Center, and some city council members don’t think that’s right.
Room tax revenues were supposed to cover that, until there was a change in the financing. The city agreed to get a list of priority items, totaling $75,000. The entire list would cost over $200,000.
Ald. Cathy Spears believes the Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau should give the city a grant to cover that. She says if they don’t, maybe the city should say “No” the next time the group wants something from the city.
Spears argues the other communities that are contributing to the construction of the facility are benefiting from it, so they should share in the costs.
The Fox Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau gets one percent of the room tax revenue, to provide grants and cover its operations.
