The future of a historic building in downtown Appleton is up in the air.
A fire caused part of the roof to collapse above Author’s Kitchen and Bar, at the corner of Appleton and Washington streets.
Christine Williams of the Appleton Historical Society says the building dates back to the late 1800s. It was home to Hauert’s Feed Mill until the 1930s or 1940s, selling mostly food and supplies for livestock.
Williams says a shoe store called Bohl and Maeser’s was there from the 1940s to the 1980s. A series of restaurants then moved in, including Polly’s and Il Angolo.
Appleton firefighters think the building could be a total loss.
