Oshkosh officials will be scrambling to find a new use for another big box store along I-41, now that Shopko is closing.
Mayor Steve Cummings says it took a long time just to find another business to take over the former Sears and K-Mart farther north on Koeller Street. The former Walmart site at Aviation Plaza in Oshkosh remains a vacant lot, more than a decade after the store moved to Washburn Street.
Cummings believes it’s time to give up on attracting new retailers to that corridor. He thinks office space or mixed-use developments might work. He says that’s what’s going in along I-41 between Appleton’s northeast side and Kaukauna.
