Neenah’s mayor is questioning why the hotel that benefits the most from the Fox Cities Exhibition Center in downtown Appleton hasn’t paid its room tax.
The Red Lion Paper Valley owes over $142,000.
Money from area hotels go to fund a number of high-profile construction projects which includes the Exhibition Center.
Mayor Dean Kaufert believes there could be a cash flow problem because they’re in the middle of a major remodeling project. He says that’s understandable but they should be up front about it.
As a penalty, communities like Appleton have the right to impose a fine of up to one percent per month on hotels who get behind.
Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna says they haven’t even talked about that.
The Days Inn and Suites in Kaukauna owes over a little more than $23,000.
The Howard Johnson in Grand Chute also owes money, but the exact amount isn’t clear.
