Calumet County is trying to get a second judge to handle cases, and some Republican lawmakers want to help.
There’s a proposal to add judges in about a dozen counties in the state, and Calumet County is on the list.
County Administrator Todd Romenesko says they’ve been trying to get another one for more than 20 years. The county already put a second courtroom and offices in the courthouse, to be ready.
He says Calumet County the second or third fastest-growing in the state, with a population of more than 50,000. He doesn’t think there’s another county in Wisconsin with that population base, and only one judge.
